PRACTICAL EXERCISE · MODULE 9

Present an infrastructure investment to a CTO and CFO

A fictional company spends 80,000 annually on infrastructure and 40,000 on operating labor. A proposal costs 90,000 annually plus 20,000 migration and is expected to reduce labor to 20,000. Reliability improvement is plausible but unmeasured. All figures are illustrative.

Work through the problem

  • Calculate current, first-year proposed, and later-year proposed costs.
  • State which assumptions require customer validation.
  • Prepare a CTO explanation of architecture, risks, testing, and rollback.
  • Prepare a CFO explanation of timing, uncertainty, and measurable outcomes.
  • Define a PoC that tests the labor and reliability assumptions before broad adoption.

Deliverables

  • One-page business case
  • Three-minute executive presentation outline
  • Acceptance and review plan

Self-review rubric

  • Correct arithmetic: current 120,000; first year 130,000; later years 110,000
  • No invented guaranteed outage savings
  • Explicit ownership and decision criteria
  • Technical and financial narratives use the same assumptions
Compare with the worked approach

The first year costs 10,000 more under the stated assumptions, while later years may save 10,000 annually. A decision can still favor the proposal for verified reliability or strategic value, but those benefits must be measured or represented as uncertainty. Test operating effort and recovery behavior, include migration risk, and let the customer's decision owners validate the business case.
