Learning objectives
- Explain WAF scope and limitations
- Investigate a false positive using request evidence
- Design controlled rule exceptions
The mental model
A web application firewall evaluates HTTP traffic against security policies. It can help identify suspicious patterns and enforce application-facing rules before a request reaches the origin. It does not understand every business rule or repair vulnerable source code. A rule that blocks an attack-shaped request may also block a legitimate client using an unusual payload. The practical skill is therefore policy operation: understand what matched, why it matters, and how to narrow an exception without opening a broad gap. Security and availability are connected. A policy that prevents customers from using a critical workflow can create its own incident, even when the rule is working exactly as configured.
How it works
A WAF design combines managed detection with customer-specific policy. Managed rules address known attack patterns and classes, while custom rules express conditions relevant to the application. Actions can include blocking or other supported handling, depending on the product and rule type. Inspect current documentation for exact action availability and ordering. A matching event is evidence that a rule condition was satisfied, not automatic proof that the request was malicious.
For a suspected false positive, collect the timestamp, hostname, path, method, request identifier, rule identifier, and relevant sanitized request characteristics. Compare a failing legitimate request with a successful one. Determine whether the rule should be tuned for a specific endpoint or trusted workflow. Avoid disabling the entire WAF or exempting all requests from a large address range merely to restore one client. Test the change against both the legitimate request and the attack case the rule was meant to address. Keep an owner, rationale, expiry or review date, and rollback plan for exceptions. The application team must still address injection, access control, and unsafe input handling in code; the WAF is an additional control with its own limits.
Applied example · hypothetical
Hypothetical example: a developer tool accepts code snippets, and a managed rule flags a legitimate sample containing SQL syntax. Support reports a sudden increase in failed submissions. The team correlates request identifiers with a specific rule and reproduces the failure using sanitized data. A narrowly scoped exception for the intended upload operation restores functionality while retaining protection elsewhere. They also verify application-side validation and authorization. The outcome is neither blindly trusting the rule nor disabling protection globally; it is a documented adjustment supported by legitimate and malicious test cases.
In a customer engagement
For Cloudflare WAF discussions, ask which rule and action produced the event and whether the traffic actually passed through the proxied path. Review the customer's relevant plan and configuration before proposing a feature. Explain false-positive tuning as a controlled operational process, with evidence and ownership, rather than a permanent blanket allowlist that nobody revisits.
Interview relevance
Security interviews often test whether you can balance protection and usability. Describe the evidence needed to identify a false positive, then a narrow reversible change and validation. Explicitly preserve application security responsibilities. Saying that a WAF makes vulnerable code safe signals an incomplete understanding of defense in depth.
Common mistakes
- Disabling all rules to fix one endpoint
- Calling every match malicious without context
- Treating WAF as a substitute for secure code
Key terminology
WAF — A control that evaluates HTTP requests against application security rules.
False positive — A legitimate activity incorrectly classified or handled as undesirable.
Managed rule — A vendor-maintained detection rule or rule set intended to address known attack patterns.
